1973 Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. There's no end to air-cooled VW Beetles and Transporters in this series, but the Type 3s have been quite rare; in fact, so far we've had just this '73 Squareback and this Karmann Ghia Type 34. Now I've managed to add another '73 Squareback, and this one has the rare automatic transmission.

The Type 3s just weren't as beloved as the Beetles over the long haul; sure, many more Beetles were sold here, but that still doesn't fully account for the rarity of the 3s now. As for the 411s and 412s, I haven't seen one of them on the street for many years.

In 1973, you could get yourself a new Squareback for $2,995, exactly the same as a Datsun 610 wagon. That price was also about $650 more than you'd pay for a new Chevy Vega Kammback wagon and $600 more than a Pinto wagon. The Fiat 124 wagon's price tag that year? $2,795! The Vee-Dub weighed just 2,217 pounds, which was a good thing… considering that its 1600cc engine made only 52 horsepower.

VW Scirocco Studie R Celebrates Historic German/Italian Alliances [Axis Of Scirocco]

Realizing the Italian flag looks better on cars than the German flag, Volkswagen chose the Bologna Motor Show to launch the VW Scirocco Studie R. Essentially a hopped-up version of the standard car, it features a 270 HP version of the 2.0-liter TSI turbo-four sending its power through a 6-speed DSG gearbox. All the other additions are largely cosmetic, but are executed to an unusually classy standard. Aggressive air intakes and a carbon front splitter fill out the front of the Scirocco, while inside there’s a nice set of Recaro buckets finished up with Tricolore stitching. Expect a less Italiangasmic version of this car to arrive in showrooms next year as the 2010 VW Scirocco R, no, we won’t get that one either. The release follows the jump.

Scirocco Studie R

* Volkswagen’s latest design study, the Scirocco Studie R, premieres at Bologna and is inspired by the Scirocco GT24 which raced to success in its class at the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race earlier this year. Finished in white, the Studie R has contrasting high-gloss black detailing and styling accents in red and green to the wing mirrors and on the ‘Bologna ‘08’ badging, paying homage to the Show’s host nation.

Three large air intakes at the front aid cooling to the uprated 2.0-litre 270 PS engine, while a front splitter is designed to minimise lift. The rear is dominated by a large rear wing and a distinctive revised rear bumper which incorporates a diffuser and twin oval exhausts. The Studie R is fitted with racing-derived sports suspension and four-piston brake callipers sit behind specially developed bespoke polished five arm, triple spoke 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the cabin, the Scirocco Studie R is upholstered with black and white nappa leather and complemented with low- and high-gloss carbonfibre trim. The Italian-inspired red and green design accents continue on the seams of the Recaro seats, steering wheel, armrest, gearknob and floor mats.

Goodman’s Single Cab Deluxe

The streets of Miami are filled with tons of high end, exotic cars. From South Beach to Star Island and Coral Gables to Downtown Miami, you can find Lamborghinis, Porsches, and Ferraris littering the streets – you literally see them parked on every street corner. The funny thing, though, is that while I constantly drive right past Lamborghinis with a bored look on my face, I almost jumped out of my seat when I saw this 1967 Volkswagen Single Cab (truck) cruising down the street. To be honest, I had never seen anything like it before. I just don’t see these types of cars every day!

When I saw this Volkswagen Single Cab driving down the street, I was already late to meet up with some friends from out of town who work for a big car magazine, but they would just have to wait a bit longer – this Single Cab had me buggin out because it has so much style. I just had to stop and shoot some photos! Check out the detailed photos and continue reading at MotorMavens.com.
