For those heavy traffic commuters who fear being runover in a Smart car the people of 5th Gear over in the Mother Land have found a Smart solution. In the Smart ForFun2 you can easily take up your share of the road and even more easily stare down that trucker crowding your lane at HIS eye level. While matting a Smart-for-two car with a Mercedes UniMog might seem to oppose the philosophy that drives the Smart car it does make for one entertaining ride.

Beyond.ca - Car Forum Helps Catch GT-R Car Thief

Stolen Nissan GTR Skyline Photo

When a thief made off with this 1991 Nissan Skyline GT-R during a test drive, car owner Shaun Ironside enlisted the help of fellow members of car forum Beyond.ca (Click To See the Original Thread Post)

James Lynch snapped this picture of Shaun Ironside’s stolen car — with the alleged thief behind the wheel — after reading about the theft on the website Beyond.ca.

Modified Nissan Skyline GTR 1991

The Specs: Full Greddy T78-33d Turbo Kit, HKS camshafts, A/M Computer, E-OI Display Controller, 300km/hr Speedo, N1 Headlights, Greddy Exhaust, Trust Intercooler, Zeal Adjustable Suspension, Panasport G7 17 inch Alloys

Shaun Ironside and friends used Beyond.ca (Calgary Car Forum), Facebook and Google Maps to take down what might be the world’s dumbest car thief dubbed “The Calgary Skyline GTR Lobster Claw Bandit” — and posted video of the arrest on YouTube.

The thief took the modified Nissan Skyline GT-R for a test drive in Calgary and never came back. The owner, Shaun Ironside, 27, called the cops but figured the car was headed for a chop shop, never to be seen again.

Desperate, Ironside posted a thread at Beyond.ca, an automotive discussion forum with 46,000 members. They’d nabbed a hit-and-run driver last year, so if anyone could find the car — or what might be left of it — they could stop the thief, Ironside thought.

“I had more confidence in the forum guys finding the car because I know how many of them there are, and they’re all car guys,” said Ironside. He owns Envision Auto, where the 1991 Nissan was stolen around 1:30 p.m. March 26.

The thief would be easy to spot, Ironside wrote in the post, because he’s missing the middle and right fingers of his left hand. The car was pretty unique too — a right-hand-drive model imported from Japan. The thread languished until the following afternoon when forum moderator James Lynch happened to spot the stolen Skyline and snapped a picture of the suspect behind the wheel — waving his disfigured hand.

“I pulled out my camera, but I wanted to see his hand, so I did the rock out sign,” Lynch, 22, told Wired.com, referring to the splayed finger gesture that’s ubiquitous at heavy metal concerts. “He did it back and I saw his hand. I rolled down my window and yelled, ‘Nice stolen car!’ He’s like, ‘It’s not stolen,’ ”

The suspect sped off in the turbocharged 400-horsepower car at more than 100 mph, almost running off the road in the process. “He’s a lousy driver,” said Lynch, who decided chasing him wouldn’t be wise. Instead, he called the police and posted the suspect’s picture at Beyond.ca.

[Video] Ferrari F430 Scuderia - (Darth Maul’s Ride)

f430-scuderia.jpg

Shake off your midweek blues by watching this 5 minute video where Car Magazine Online got to test drive Darth Maul’s new Ferrari F430 Scuderia both on the road and on the track.

This beautiful and very agile new iteration of the F430 is 20bhp more powerful and 220lbs lighter than the regular Ferrari F430 giving it some super sexy handling abilities both on the road and on the track.

Scuderia Ferrari is the name used for Ferrari’s Automobile Division concerned with Formula One Racing. Ferrari’s racing division has completely devoted its attention and funding to its Formula One team, Scuderia Ferrari.

Scuderia is Italian for “Stable”, rightfully used to denote this new beauty built on Ferrari’s acquired F1 knowledge that is 2nd to nobody.

F1 driver Michael Schumacher officially unveiled the car in Frankfurt this month and also was involved in its development and testing.

Quick Specs:
510 bhp @ 8500 rpm
346.7 ft lbs @ 5250 rpm
0-60mph: < 3.6 sec
Top Speed: 198 mph
Aerodynamically Tweaked for more stability at higher speeds

Price: ~$350,000 USD ($40k more than the regular F430)

Ferrari claims that by 2012 they will have stopped increasing the HP of these magnificent stallions, as lighter weight materials will be used more and more in their construction in order to achieve even higher Power to Weight ratios.

Police to question Enzo Ferrari owner about 339 km/h video

enzoooo.jpg

Videos of exotic sports cars doing high speed runs are all the rage on youtube. But recent complaints about 200 kmh activity on public highways have some police forces asking questions.

The specific video that the RCMP in Alberta are investigating was linked on pretty much every car forum around the world and even made it to the front page of Digg.com.

With the healthy run-up in the price of light sweet crude, local real estate, and the Canadian dollar, 25 year olds in Calgary can use their fat paychecks and new-found home equity to buy exotic cars from the US significantly cheaper than they could in Canada. Late model Porsches Turbos, Ferraris and Lamborghinis are also in steady supply from a few local dealers. Cars ranging from 996 Turbos to Gallardos and F430s are a relatively common sight. The new owners of these cars often stage impromptu cruises, first meeting at a parking lot, and then going for a scenic ‘drive’ outside the city, in packs ranging from three or four to sometimes over 20. Seeing one of these car club runs on any summer weekend is not uncommon. Pictures taken by keen car spotters are often posted on forums and photo sites.

Zahir Rana, owner of the pre-owned exotic dealership ZR Auto (and a spectacular yellow Enzo Ferrari) , stages a few of these cruises with his customers every year. Two dozen exotics, usually ordered by type of car (Enzo in the front), head out together on a long drive through the scenic rocky mountain and British Columbia region. Nearly every car in the group can reach 200 km h very quickly and very comfortably, let alone much higher speeds. Rana has been known to hire helicopters to film their exotic car mountain road escapades.

The video filmed in October 2006, shows Zahir Rana outside the city with a couple of his customers. The cars featured are an Enzo Ferrari and a Novitec Rosso F430 F1 Supersport both belonging to Rana, and 2 lightly modified Lamborghini Gallardos. A ‘Top Speed’ run is attempted in each car, with the Enzo Ferrari easily taking the crown, its digital speedometer recorded a Max 339 km/h. (see photo below)

part-5.jpg

The video clearly states that the top speed runs were done in controlled conditions, by experts, on a closed highway.

At the time of its popularity on the web , there were many discussions of whether the roads were actually closed-off to the public when these high speed runs were performed, and if cops had been informed and this was done legally.

All that discussion can be put to rest as Alberta Police are stating in public that they had no idea!

This story is being covered now all the major newspapers in Canada. The globe and mail article includes transcripts of several noteworthy excerpts from the video, including this gem:

“I could have done 350, but I ran out of road,” Mr. Rana tells the camera.

Rana is currently declining comment.

August 14, 2007 ‘Dangerous driving speeds up in Alberta’ Article

Update: Wed Aug 15

Zahir Rana is interviewed in the Calgary Sun

In the article, Rana says they were not out racing, they were “out for coffee!”
Rana also acknowledges the video is under investigation, and then says ‘the film is fiction’.

Calgary Sun Article

CBC reports 4 people were arrested based on reports of 3 Ferraris and a Lamborghini driving at 200 kmh early Sunday morning outside Calgary. The article confirms that one of the people arrested was infact Zahir Rana.

Rana once again claims the video is a fake!
“It’s not factual at all,” he said. “You can make … spaceships land on the moon and put it on TV and [make it] look real.”
