2010 Camaro Launched, Performance Package Photos Leaked

Barely two days out of the womb after making its official debut on Saturday at the Indy Bash 2008, the 2010 Chevy Camaro is already being pushed to overachieve. Published in a thread by the Camaroholics [we mean that affectionately] over at Camaro5.com, it appears as though GM is planning to offer an endless array of performance mod packages when the 5th gen 2010 Camaro becomes available for pre-order Ocobter 13th. Dollar details for the upgrades have yet to be revealed, but after viewing leaked photos of a 2010 Camaro sporting a few of the available enhancements, we ask, at what price, beauty?

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid: Score 1 For Team America

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid

Although we’re having a difficult time picturing a sawdust-covered, 250lb construction worker nodding fondly towards his truck and saying something like, “Yep Bob, she clocks about 30 mph in Mode 1 and is as quiet as a newborn kitten’s paws on plush carpet,” we’d still like to give Chevy a tip of the hat for engineering the first hybrid heavy-duty pick-up truck.

A 2-Mode Hybrid, the new Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid boasts almost 50% better fuel efficiency over previous model years while maintain 100% of the muscle. Among one of its most impressive features; engaged in Mode 1, the Silverado Hybrid’s electric propulsion is capable of independently powering the vehicle at low speeds, even while towing at maximum capacity [6,100 lbs]. An Electronically Variable Transmission [EVT] is jointly powered by both a 6.0L V8 gasoline engine and 300-volt NiMH battery, boosting the Silverado Hybrid’s overall output to 332-hp. A 2-Mode vehicle-standard regenerative braking system provides a constant source of electric energy that helps the Silverado Hybrid’s 26-gallon fuel tank average a cruising range of over 500 miles. Expected to come with $30k sticker price [or somewhere thereabouts], Chevrolet earns another point for innovation by offering eco-friendly brawn on a budget.

[As a side note, we’d like credit for resisting the temptation to incorporate some cheesy revision of Chevrolet’s “An American Revolution” slogan in our post…]

The 2009 Dodge Durango HEMI Hybrid: Another Jolly Green Giant

Once a member of the environmental blacklist, the new Dodge Durango Hybrid is joining the 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid on the growing list of eco-friendly SUVs. Perhaps one of the greatest examples of American automotive engineering aggressively refusing to be outdone on their home turf, the new 2009 Dodge Durango HEMI Hybrid.

Still featuring a hefty curb weight of 5,609 lbs. and a towing capacity of 6,000 lbs, with the new Durango Hybrid, drivers are no longer forced to choose between power or fuel efficiency. With a redesigned intake manifold and revised exhaust gas-recirculation system [EGR], the new Durango 2-Mode Hybrid will hit the market in the fall of ’08 with its famed 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine and an EPA fuel estimate of 18mpg city/19 hwy.

Using much the same technology as Chrysler’s own green can of whoop-ass, the ’09 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, the new Durango Hybrid features a Multi-Displacement System [Chrysler/Dodge’s word for “cylinder deactivation] that turns the traditional gas-guzzler into a dainty sipper [well, we mean the term “dainty” in a relative sense]. Although the HEMI’s green makeover causes a slight [11 unit] drop in the ICE’s [Internal Combustion Engine] horsepower, thanks to the additional power generated by the Durango Hybrid’s twin electric motors, the net power output is boosted to 385-hp.

Quietly efficient battery packs that power most of the Durango Hybrid’s auxiliary components are discreetly installed beneath the rear passenger seats and are automatically recharged via the Durango Hybrid’s regenerative braking system. Unfortunately, the Dodge Durango Hybrid’s eco-friendly modifications make for a $45,340 sticker that’s a little pricier than those of past Durango models – but if you ask us, it’s money worth spending.

Come Away With Me Lucille, In My Sick Nasty Oldsmobile

The 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass wasn’t even cool in 1986, so what could it possibly bring to the table now ? Enter: the car customization expertise of the Dirty South. This ride (more pictures below), which is currently up for grabs on eBay Motors (motto: “A Habit Both More Addicting And More Expensive Then Unfiltered Menthols”) is a 6-cylinder, 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass with 73,000 miles on it (mostly well-documented stuntin’ miles).

According to the seller’s description, the Olds has been professionally raised and sits on a well cared-for set of 24” rims. The paint is described as DuPont “Catalonia Splash” with “Louie Vaton [sic]” (I’m not sure if they misspelled it purposely to avoid copyright infringement, or Louis Vuitton’s French pronunciation presented an insurmountable obstacle for the phonetic speller) flip accents on the front trim. In keeping with the theme, the Cutlass’ interior has also been completely reupholstered in Louie Vaton leather.

This particular Olds is certainly an acquired taste, but I have a healthy respect for any automotive enthusiast who devotes time and effort into custom craftsmanship of any kind (especially if they execute it this well).
